Henry Darger’s Secret World Comes to the Stage

The life and work of reclusive outsider artist Henry Darger has been adapted for the stage in a new play titled *Bughouse*, now running at New York's Vineyard Theatre. The production, directed by Martha Clarke with a script by Beth Henley adapted from Darger's own writings, stars performance artist John Kelly. It immerses the audience in a recreation of Darger's cluttered Chicago apartment, where he secretly created his vast, fantastical artwork and manuscripts over decades.

This theatrical interpretation underscores Darger's profound and enduring cultural impact, transforming a janitor who died in obscurity into a celebrated figure. His posthumous discovery has already inspired biographies and major exhibitions; bringing his "secret world" to live performance introduces his singular vision to new audiences and reflects on the powerful, often desperate drive to create art outside the mainstream.
